Former PGA Tour Press Secretary Jim Gaquin was recently honored with the Frank H. Sellman Distinguished Service Award at the Massachusetts Golf Association's annual Salute to Champions Dinner held at the Wellesley Country Club. Established in 1988, the Sellman Award is presented to those individuals who have exhibited exemplary service to the game of golf during their career. Over the years, Jim's been active with the PGA, USGA and Royal Canadian Golf Association and has served the golfing community of Massachusetts "pro bono" for 22 years - including 7 on the Executive Committee! Some of the highlights of Jim's career include receiving the William Richardson Award from the Golf Writers Association of America in 1979 for "his contributions to golf "and in 2008 receiving the Sixth Annual Honorary Alumnus Award from the Francis Ouimet Fund for his "outstanding support and service over the years." Jim and his wife Lois founded and currently serve as directors of the annual Cape Cod Open and Cape Cod Senior Open. Jim told me, "I am very pleased and very proud to get the Frank Sellman Award, came as quite a shock to me but I am delighted." Thank you Jim and Lois for all that you do for the game of golf in Massachusetts!

Burj Dubai Grand Opening!

Spectacular Opening Ceremony - January 4th 2K10

On January 4th, thousands of residents and tourists crowded around the tapering half-mile high tower, which stands at least 160 stories high (fyi the exact height of the tower is 828 meters tall - the world's tallest building!) for the fantabulous over the top Opening Ceremonies! Dubai's hereditary ruler unveiled a plaque at the tower's base, thus kicking off inaugural festivities that included traditional Gulf Arab dance performances and skydivers landing parachutes emblazoned with the colors of the United Arab Emirates flag near the tower's base. Pleasant Valley's Head Golf Professional Paul Parajeckas has quite the sterling resume! A former PGA and Senior PGA Touring Pro, Paul was recently nominated for the New England PGA Hall of Fame Award by his peers. This past August Paul won the New England PGA Championship at the Worcester Country Club after playing in it for over 35 times and in his own words, "being a bridesmaid 6 times." Paul said, "Winning that was one of the highlights of my career, I've pretty much won everything in New England, it was a pretty big, very exciting 3 days of my career. It was the most exciting thing and it didn't really hit me until about a week later! All the congratulations from my family, friends and peers was just overwhelming!" An interesting fact one may not know about Paul is that 7 years ago he, along with a few friends, invented a nifty performance enhancing device called "the Stretch Towel." Comprised of a stretchy terry cloth fabric, it comes with an instructional DVD along with 28 exercises to assist golfers in stretching which helps golfers to stay limber providing more motion and flexibility - greatly affecting the golf swing. Paul says, "It's extremely important for injury prevention that golfers stretch before and after they play."
